POP3 Mailserver
by Paul Batchie
A Listbox is shown, displaying:
Load eMails from (server, port, user, password):
Here the POP3-Server is entered, from which Hamster is to fetch emails.
For adding a new POP3-Server click the command button [Add].
Input in the following dialog the server name, and if necessary the server port (separated by a comma).
Example:
"pop.myprovider.com, pop3 " or briefly, "pop.myprovider.com ".
If the new server should already exist, Hamster asks whether an
alias is to be created. This permits e.g. the meaningful use of
several GMX accounts. The alias is recognizable by the suffix "/xx", where xx is for sequential numbering.
With the command button [Settings] you can determine the following:
- The TCP port, which Hamster is to use with the remote server; Standard is "110", or "pop3".
- The input of password and user name for the server. The password fields can have three statuses:
- " { Ask } " Hamster tests the user name and password only if necessary. This is set by speccing a "?" for the password.
- " { Set } " Hamster stores the data in the file "password!!!" (see note).
- " { Empty } " Hamster does not use Authentication.
- The Local user account which is to be assigned eMails by this server. Here all local users are offered in a drop-down box, according to the following pattern:
- Admin - admin = hamster administrator
- (Group name - user name in short form = user name in long form)
- Which section of the Mailfilter file Mailfilt.hst this server will use. This file can be edited directly by means of a command button.
- How emails are to be treated after being loaded from the server: leave/do not leave/use default. The default spec here is the global specification for all servers from the menu Configuration/Mailserver/Settings tab.
- Possible overides for connection to the server and command implementation timeouts.
- The use of a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) tunnel for connection
to the server, its dedicated local port, and any additional options for the SSL
Wrapper stunnelw.exe.
Important: The use of SSL in connection with Hamster requires extra tools. These can be found at the sites: http://sites.inka.de/ximera/stunnelw-en.zip and http://www.stunnel.org/.
You can delete a listed POP3-Server with the switch [ Delete ].
(Note:)
Use of the APOP of procedure for the Authentication:
In order to use the APOP procedure (the encoded transmittal of name
and password), prefix the password with "APOP: ". For the obligatory use of conventional authentication the prefix " PASS: " is used. This is only necessary if " PASS: " or " APOP: " are components of the actual password .
Examples of inputs in the password field:
secret = > uses: USER/PASS standard setting
APOP:secret = > uses APOP
PASS:APOP:secret = > uses USER/PASS with password " APOP:secret".
PASS:PASS:secret = > uses: USER/PASS with password " PASS:secret ".
